1.10 – Sleeping Beauty
Written by: Trevor Munson, Ron Koslow Directed by: John T. Kretchmer Transcribed by: pinkpaisley
CUT TO HOSPITAL [Coraline is in bed. Mick and Beth are there with her. Doctor Duffy is examining Coraline]
DR. DUFFY: The object missed her heart, but punctured her left lung and partially tore the pericardium.
MICK: Is she gonna live?
DR. DUFFY: It’s a deep wound and infection has already set in. That’s our biggest concern right now. That and a build up of fluid around the heart. You know, it’s a very unusual wound. I understand you told the ER doctor that it was some sort of accident. Do either of you know what happened?
MICK: No. We don’t know what happened.
DR. DUFFY: Well, all we can do now is monitor her. I’ll let you know if there’s any change.
MICK: Thank you very much.
BETH: Why did she lie for me? Why didn’t she tell them I did it?
MICK: She wouldn’t want the police involved.
BETH: I can’t believe I almost killed her. I-I thought for sure she was a vampire.
MICK: You couldn’t have known. I didn’t even know.
BETH: You still care for her, don’t you?
MICK: She was my wife.
BETH: You really think there’s some kind of cure?
MICK: Coraline was a vampire for years. Now she’s as human as you are. Something changed her back and if she dies I’ll never know what that was or how she did it.
CUT TO NEW YORK CITY [A man walks into a room, where an old man is sitting in a chair, hooked up to medical equipment]
OLD MAN: Did you find him?
[The man hands him a photo of Josef]
OLD MAN: That’s him. Where is he?
MAN: He’s living in Los Angeles, using the name Josef Kostan. What do you want me to do?
OLD MAN: What I hired you to do. Kill him.
MAN: I’ll take the next flight out.
OLD MAN: It has to be done with fire.
MAN: Fire is impractical. Long range. A single shot to the head would-
OLD MAN: -No. It has to be fire.
MAN: Why fire?
OLD MAN: Because I said so. Burn him to death and you’ll get your money.
MAN: Consider it done.
CUT TO JOSEF’S OFFICE [He is playing poker with some friends]
JOSEF: Now, trust me on this one, fellas. You get mixed up with mortal girls, it never ends well.
FRIEND #1: You can always turn them not-mortal.
JOSEF: Ah, that’s too much commitment.
FRIEND #2: Come on, so you’re saying never turn a girl, ever?
JOSEF: All I’m saying is - forever is a long time.
FRIEND #1: I know what you’re saying.
JOSEF: Alright! Bets.
FRIEND #1: I’m in, with three AB Negatives.
FRIEND #2: I’m out.
FRIEND #1: What have you got?
JOSEF: Two pair.
FRIEND #1: Two pair? That’s it?
JOSEF: Yeah.
FRIEND #1: A flush beats that.
JOSEF: Of fives. I guess tonight’s my night, boys.
[The man from New York has entered the room and opens fire at the men and then throws heavy explosives in the room]
[Cut to firemen putting out the remaining fires in the apartment. Mick and Josef’s Head of Security are at the scene]
TOM: Glad to see you here, Mr. St. John.
MICK: What happened, Tom?
TOM: We’re still putting the pieces together. There aren’t many pieces left.
MICK: Josef?
TOM: Forensics haven’t found any remains yet. Just ash. Whoever did this brought an awful lot of firepower to take out just one man.
MICK: How did they get in?
TOM: Had to be real pros. I’ve been the Head of Security for Mr. Kostan for five years. I’m telling you there’s no way anyone should have been able to get anywhere near this office.
CUT TO BUZZWIRE [Beth is working late]
MAUREEN: Great. You’re still here. That’s why I love you.
BETH: I just had to finish up some copy. I spent the afternoon in the hospital.
MAUREEN: Ah, yeah, Morgan. How’s she doing?
BETH: She’s in pretty bad shape.
MAUREEN: Does anyone know how she hurt herself?
BETH: No. She still unconscious.
MAUREEN: Cheer up. I’ve got something to take your mind off Morgan. Explosion in a downtown office building. It took out the top floor.
BETH: Terrorists?
MAUREEN: No. Apparently, the target was this big shot hedge fund trader.
BETH: Oh, my God. That’s Josef Kostan. He’s a friend of Mick’s.
MAUREEN: Okay, I take it back. This is why I love you.
BETH: Was he there?
MAUREEN: ‘Fraid so. No survivors. Have a cameraman meet you down there. I wanna know the who, what and why.
BETH: I can’t cover this story. This guy’s a really good friend of Mick’s.
MAUREEN: Great. Use that to show some vulnerability. Tracking says women 18 to 34 find you a little harsh.
CUT TO JOSEF’S OFFICE [Mick is looking through the debris. Beth shows up]
MICK: It was poker night. I was supposed to be here.
BETH: I am so sorry.
MICK: Yeah. Me too.
BETH: Who could have done this? I mean they used fire, they must have known he was a vampire.
MICK: Josef had enemies, but this… Who could hate him this much?
BETH: Yeah.
MICK: You brought your camera guy? That’s why you’re here? You’re on a story?
BETH: Look, Maureen sent me.
MICK: Beth, just go away.
BETH: Listen, they were gonna send someone here to cover this story. Wouldn’t you rather it was me?
MICK: My friend just died. I don’t really wanna talk to you right now. No, actually you stay and get your story. You do your job, I’ll do mine.
CUT TO SECURITY ROOM [Mick is talking to Tom]
MICK: Josef had cameras installed in every office.
TOM: Top of the line. Offices, hallways, elevators, the parking structure, the basement. Even the boiler room. He even wanted infrared cameras installed. I don’t know why, but he insisted.
MICK’S VOICE OVER: I know why. Vampires don’t give off body heat. Josef wanted to know exactly who his visitors were.
TOM: Here. This is him.
MICK’S VOICE OVER: A heat-signature. Josef’s killer is a human.
TOM: He must have come in with the maintenance crew for the night shift. When I saw him going to Mr. Kostan’s office I headed up there, but it was too late.
MICK: Wait. Stop. Stop right there. Can you zoom in on the incendiaries? Those look military-grade. I need a copy of this footage.
TOM: Sure, anything I can do to help get this guy.
[Mick’s cell phone rings]
MICK: Yeah?
DR. DUFFY: Mr. St. John?
MICK: Yes.
DR. DUFFY: This is Dr. Duffy. You should come down to the hospital. Ms. Vincent’s awake.
CUT TO HOSPITAL [Mick and Dr. Duffy are walking to Coraline’s room]
MICK: How’s she doing? Is she okay?
DR. DUFFY: Her wound shows some sign of healing. She’s been in and out of consciousness.
MICK: Can I talk to her?
DR. DUFFY: Just a few minutes, she needs to rest.
MICK: Okay, thanks.
[Dr. Duffy leaves. Mick goes over to Coraline]
MICK: Hey. Coraline.
CORALINE: You look like someone just died.
MICK: Someone did. It’s Josef.
CORALINE: Oh God. I remember introducing you two. You thought he was a pompous jerk. And he thought you were cut out to be a vampire.
MICK: We were both probably right.
CORALINE: And once you were best friends anyways.
MICK: Yeah, we were. And now he’s gone.
CORALINE: But I’m back.
MICK: You have to tell me how.
CORALINE: How I survived the fire that you thought killed me?
MICK: How you became human.
CORALINE: It always comes back to this. You’re so desperate to be mortal again. To experience death for yourself, why? It’s Beth, isn’t it? You think you love her.
MICK: This is not about Beth, okay?
CORALINE: I came back for you. I became human for you. Doesn’t that mean anything?
MICK: How, Coraline?
CORALINE: For you.
[She slips into unconsciousness again]
MICK: You have to tell me how.
[Mick draws some of her blood]
CUT TO MICK’S BUILDING [Beth is in the hallway waiting for him]
BETH: Hey.
MICK: Hey.
BETH: Look, I’m really so-
MICK: Look, you know- I overreacted.
BETH: I shouldn’t have brought a camera into Josef’s office, I’m so sorry.
MICK: This is just really hard for me. All of it. Coraline’s in the hospital. Josef’s dead.
BETH: I know he meant a lot to you.
MICK: I’ve outlived so many of my human friends, you’d think I’d be used to losing people by now.
BETH: Yeah, but losing Josef is different.
MICK: He survived four hundred years. Four hundred years. He saw so much. So much history. He was history. And now he’s gone. And that loss to me is so enormous that I’m not even sure if I know how to mourn him.
[Beth hugs him]
MICK: I need a drink.
BETH: Yeah, me too.
[They walk into the apartment, only to find Josef sitting behind Mick’s desk]
JOSEF: Oh, you’re just gonna stand there all day or you gonna help me find out who killed me?
[Cut to Mick and Josef watching the surveillance footage from the office]
MICK: You recognize that guy?
JOSEF: No, I’ve never seen him before. Is he a vampire?
MICK: No, he showed up as human on your infrareds.
BETH: Does he know Josef’s a vampire?
MICK: Well, he did use fire.
BETH: The other people he killed, your friends, were they vampires too?
JOSEF: Uhuh. Well. Remind me to donate a little something to charity in their name. Oh wait, I can’t. I have no money. I have no office, I have no anything, because some janitor decided to whack me in a very public, very hard to explain ‘I’m still alive’ kind of way. So, everyone thinks I’m dead.
MICK: Yeah, and it has to stay that way. This janitor of yours is a professional assassin with access to military-grade weaponry. Somebody hired him, and you’re only gonna be safe so long as he thinks he succeeded.
JOSEF: So, find him and whack him, so I can carry one with business. Where are you going?
MICK: Well, your assassin maybe ex-military. I’m gonna see if your hacker buddy Rider England can get me into their files.
JOSEF: He can’t.
MICK: Oh, he can’t hack the military?
JOSEF: Oh, he can. He did. That’s why he is on a sabbatical in South America right now.
BETH: I know somebody. Sam does some computer work at BuzzWire.
MICK: Okay, let’s go. You. Stay. You do not leave this apartment.
CUT TO BUZZWIRE [Sam is looking at the surveillance footage]
SAM: Is this the only time we get a clear look at his face?
MICK: Uh, yeah.
SAM: Is there a problem?
MICK: No, I just… When Beth said she knew a hacker named Sam, I thought-
SAM: You thought I was a guy. Overweight, living in my parent’s basement, wearing a t-shirt with Yoda on it?
MICK: Uhh, yeah.
BETH: Mick’s kinda old school.
SAM: Yeah. Okay, if this guy was Special Ops, he went through basic training. Which means he had his picture taken for his military ID. I’m using facial recognition software to cross reference your image with the Pentagon’s ID database.
BETH: How do you have access to that?
SAM: Hmm, don’t ask, don’t tell.
[A match is found]
BETH: Ralf Martan.
SAM: Completed his training at Fort Bragg. Ex-military, green beret. Special Ops. He spent a year in Afghanistan and then went to Iraq. Was discharged and then went back there as part of Dark Watch Associates.
MICK: He’s a mercenary.
SAM: Looks like he got into some trouble over there. Went solo, disappeared from radar about six months ago. Talk about born to kill. You guys sure you wanna find this guy?
CUT TO MICK’S APARTMENT [Josef has some women over. Mick walks in]
JOSEF: Hey, you’re back.
MICK: Sorry. Sorry, party’s over.
JOSEF: Excuse me. But they just got here.
MICK: What did I tell you?
JOSEF: You told me not to go out. So, I ordered in.
MICK: What, do you got a death wish? Get ‘em out of here. Now.
JOSEF: I’m sorry, ladies, but daddy’s a little grumpy. We’re gonna have to pick this up later.
[The ladies leave, each kissing Josef as they go]
MICK: I don’t believe this. What if they tell someone you’re alive? You want this guy throwing a fire bomb in here too? Wreck my place? Huh? Burn me up like he did Tim and Dan? What’s the matter with you? You didn’t even think about it, did you? Did you even think about it for one second? You know what, you don’t care about yourself, can you at least care about not getting me killed?
JOSEF: Listen, I wasn’t like- Well, I got lonely man, you know that.
MICK: Yeah. I’m beginning to see why. The hacker got the assassins name. Ralf Martan. Do you know him?
JOSEF: Martan, Martan, ehm, no.
MICK: Apparently some born killer. Special Ops, Dark Watch, Afghanistan.
JOSEF: You know, last time I was there, the British were invading. And I need to go to my office.
MICK: Are you-are you kidding?
JOSEF: No. I have a fire-proof safe. I need to get some cash.
MICK: W-What do you want? You don’t need cash.
JOSEF: No, I gotta get it, okay? I can’t drink your store bought blood anymore. I need some fresh AB Negative.
MICK: Your office-your office is not a safe place! This... I’m going to bed.
JOSEF: And what am I supposed to do?
MICK: Why don’t you tidy up?
CUT TO HOSPITAL [Dr. Duffy is walking with a nurse]
DR. DUFFY: Are you sure these vitals are right?
NURSE: I checked them myself.
DR. DUFFY: So, our patient has a raging infection, but instead of spiking a fever, her temperature has dropped two degrees in the past six hours?
NURSE: I don’t know what to tell you.
DR. DUFFY: Try again. This can’t be right.
[The nurse enters Coraline’s room to check her vitals again]
NURSE: It’s okay, I’m just checking your vitals.
CORALINE: I’m dying.
NURSE: Shh. Calm down now.
CORALINE: It’s so strange. I’m not supposed to…
[The nurse leans over Coraline to fluff her pillow and Coraline turns back into a vampire]
NURSE: There you go. Nice and comfy.
CUT TO MICK’S APARTMENT [Josef is leaving while Mick is asleep]
CUT TO JOSEF’S OFFICE [He is walking down the hallway and Tom stops him]
TOM: Stop right there! [Josef turns around] Mr. Kostan?
JOSEF: Hi, Tom.
TOM: I can’t believe it.
JOSEF: Yeah, well I thought about calling first, but I don’t wanna make a big deal out of this.
TOM: You’re alive, but how?
JOSEF: It’s a long story. You’re the only one who knows I’m still alive. And we need to keep this between us.
CUT TO MICK’S APARTMENT [He wakes up and notices something is missing]
MICK: Josef!
CUT TO SECURITY ROOM AT JOSEF’S OFFICE [Tom is talking to Martan]
TOM: I called you as soon as he showed. I thought there might be a little something extra in it for me.
MARTAN: There is. [He kills Tom]
CUT TO JOSEF’S OFFICE [Josef is walking around and finds his safe. He takes some money out of it and a necklace. Martan walks up to him with a gun, but before he can fire, Mick knocks him out]
MICK: You’ve already died once this week, isn’t that enough?
[Martan gets up again and he and Mick fight]
MICK: Who you working for? Answer me! Who hired you?
[Martan fights back and Mick hangs him out of the window]
MICK: Now, I don’t like repeating myself. Huh?
MARTAN: Whitley.
MICK: Whitley?
MARTAN: John Whitley. He’s a real estate guy in New York.
[Mick pulls him back in and knocks him out]
MICK: You know that name? Whitley?
JOSEF: I don’t think so.
MICK: Don’t lie to me, Josef. He certainly seemed to know you. [Martan moans] Give me a hand lifting this guy, will ya?
[Mick turns around and Josef is gone]
MICK: Josef!!
CUT TO OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE [Martan is arrested by the police. Mick is talking to detective Kim]
KIM: What’s your connection to all this, Mick?
MICK: I’m investigating the death of Josef Kostan.
KIM: You think this guy is the one that firebombed the building?
MICK: I’m pretty sure. He looks like the same guy I saw on the surveillance tapes.
KIM: What did he come back for?
MICK: I don’t know. The security guy’s dead. Maybe he was a loose end.
KIM: I’ll look into it. Good job.
MICK: Listen. Be careful with this guy. He’s dangerous.
KIM: Hey, we do this for a living. [He walks off as Beth walks up]
BETH: Hey.
MICK: Hey.
BETH: So, I checked out that name you got. I found a John Whitley in New York. He’s 93. Wealthy real estate developer. At one point he owned half the Upper East Side.
MICK: That must be our guy.
BETH: No family. His wife died two years ago. He had a daughter who disappeared in 1955. You think Josef’s after him?
MICK: Josef’s sense of justice is pretty much an eye for an eye.
BETH: Where are you going?
MICK: New York. I have to stop Josef before he does something stupid.
BETH: I’m going with you.
MICK: Why?
BETH: To stop you from doing something stupid.
CUT TO ROAD [Martan kills the police officers transporting him and he flees]
CUT TO BETH’S APARTMENT [Beth is packing. There is a knock on the door]
BETH: Josh? Oh God, I-I completely forgot. It’s movie night, isn’t it?
JOSH: We need to talk.
BETH: Come in.
JOSH: Are you-you going somewhere?
BETH: Yes. To New York. You know the Josef Kostan story.
JOSH: I thought that was wrapped up.
BETH: No.
JOSH: So, are you going alone?
BETH: No.
JOSH: You and Mick, I bet, huh? When were you gonna tell me?
BETH: I was gonna call you from the air- airport.
JOSH: Look, this isn’t working.
BETH: It’s just a case.
JOSH: A case?
BETH: A story, whatever, work.
JOSH: Look me in the eye, right now, and tell me you don’t have feelings for him. Look me in the eye and tell me that.
[There’s a knock on the door]
MICK: You ready? Oh. I can-I’ll come back.
BETH: No.
JOSH: No. I was just leaving. You two have fun in New York.
MICK: If you need to stay-
BETH: No, it’s okay. Let’s go.
CUT TO JOHN WHITLEY’S HOUSE [Ralf Martan is holding a hand over Whitley’s mouth, causing him to panic]
MARTAN: Shhh.
WHITLEY: How did you get in here?
MARTAN: I work for you, remember? [He takes a syringe and loads it with air]
WHITLEY: What are you doing?
MARTAN: Josef Kostan. Tell me about him.
WHITLEY: Is he dead?
MARTAN: No, he’s not. He walked away from an explosion no one could possibly have survived. His friend threw me across the room with one arm. Now you’re gonna tell me how any of this is possible or I’m gonna put an air bubble into your bloodstream and you’re gonna stroke out without having gotten your revenge.
WHITLEY: He’s a vampire.
MARTAN: That’s not funny old man.
WHITLEY: No, it’s not.
MARTAN: Then tell me everything about them. Tell me how to kill them.
CUT TO A STREET [Josef gets out of a car and walks up to a house and knocks]
NURSE: Mr. Kostan. We’ve been expecting you.
CUT TO WHITLEY’S BUILDING [A doorman is making a call for Mick and Beth]
DOORMAN: I said I would. [He hangs up] Sorry, Mr. Whitley isn’t receiving visitors.
BETH: Oh, please, can you ask him again?
DOORMAN: He was very clear.
BETH: This is really important.
DOORMAN: I am sure it is. Now, is there anything else I can do for you?
BETH: Yes, can you tell him it’s regarding Josef Kostan?
[Mick passes them by and walks around to the side of the building. Beth joins him]
BETH: No way.
MICK: Hey, we asked nicely. They said ‘no’. [He jumps up and drops the fire escape ladder] After you.
CUT TO WHITLEY’S APARTMENT [A doctor is walking into Whitley’s room, followed by Mick and Beth]
DOCTOR: Mr. Whitley? There are people here. I am not sure how they got in. Should I call the police?
BETH: Mr. Whitley, we think you might be in danger.
WHITLEY: No, leave us.
MICK: You hired a hitman to kill Josef Kostan.
WHITLEY: No.
BETH: Sir, we have evidence.
WHITLEY: I hired him to kill Charles Fitzgerald.
MICK: Who?
WHITLEY: That was his name when he took my daughter from me. When he murdered her. Sara was 21 when that picture was taken. That was 1955. In a few months she was gone.
MICK: You think Josef is responsible for the death of your daughter.
WHITLEY: I know what he is. He’s a monster. He took my daughter from me.
MICK: Well, you better tell me all about Josef, so I can find him before he finds you.
WHITLEY: There. In that drawer. Bring me that diary. This was my Sara’s. My wife kept it from me until she died two years ago. My daughter was a beautiful, innocent, trusting young woman. Her only mistake was falling in love with Fitzgerald. He exploited her love. He seduced Sara and then he killed her. I couldn’t protect her then, but I can avenge her now.
BETH: So, is that all in the diary?
WHITLEY: Read for yourself.
MICK: So, you hired someone to kill him.
WHITLEY: It took me two years to find Fitzgerald. I can’t die knowing that monster still walks this earth.
[Whitley starts coughing blood and the doctor walks in]
DOCTOR: You’re gonna have to leave now.
CUT TO A PARK [Beth is reading Sara’s diary]
BETH: Hey. Thank you. Listen to this. “It doesn’t matter to me what he is. I love him. I want to be with him even though he tells me it’s impossible. I know our love can overcome any obstacle. I want him to turn me into what he is. He says it’s dangerous, but I don’t care. I’m not afraid. It’s the only way we can be together forever. I’m ready.” That was the last entry. So, Josef never mentioned any of this? Never told you about Sara?
MICK: No. I knew he lived here in New York before he moved to Los Angeles. Vamps tend to move around. We can’t stay in one spot for too long.
BETH: You have. You stayed in L.A.
MICK: I like the weather.
BETH: Really? [Her phone rings] It’s Sam. Hey, what did you find out?
SAM: Josef was picked up at the terminal by an H&G limo. I’ll text you the drop off address.
BETH: Okay, thanks. 301 Waverly Place.
[Mick and Beth leave and are followed by Martan]
CUT TO WAVERLY PLACE [Mick and Beth knock on the door]
NURSE: Can I help you?
MICK: Yes. We’re looking for Josef Kostan.
NURSE: No one by that name is here.
BETH: Are you sure? A limo service just dropped him off at this address.
NURSE: I don’t know what to tell you.
MICK: What about Charles Fitzgerald? Do you know him?
JOSEF: It’s okay, Polly. You can let them in. You can run, but you can’t hide.
MICK: Not from me. Charles.
[Cut to inside]
MICK: So, we had a pretty interesting talk with John Whitley. You wanna tell me what’s going on?
[Josef opens a bedroom door. On the bed is Sara. She is unconscious and hooked up to medical equipment]
JOSEF: Mick, Beth, this is Sara. Sara Whitley. You can take a dinner break. I’ll watch her.
BETH: What’s wrong with her?
JOSEF: She’s been in a coma. Since 1955.
BETH: Oh, my God. She hasn’t aged.
JOSEF: Yeah, I met her at Grand Central Station. We were both waiting for our train and she asked me for a light. And the moment I looked into her eyes, I knew that she was something special. I knew better than to get involved with a human. I know it was a mistake, but I did it anyway. For months, I thought I was keeping my secret from her. But then I discovered that she knew. She knew and she didn’t care. That was the happiest day of my life.
BETH: So, you were in love with her.
JOSEF: I wasn’t looking for it, believe me. The longer we were together, the more I began to think that the whole reason that I became a vampire was, you know, so I could live long enough to meet her. It took me over 350 years to find her and only a year to lose her forever.
BETH: So, what happened to her?
MICK: He tried to turn her.
JOSEF: Yeah. She’d been begging me to do it for months. I didn’t want to, but she wouldn’t let it go. She knew that was the only way we could be together. So, I tried. I drained her, I fed her my blood, but it didn’t work. She never came out of it. She got lost somewhere in between.
MICK: Josef, this, all this… It’s not your fault.
JOSEF: I know, but it is. I’m the one that did this to her.
BETH: You’ve been looking after her ever since.
JOSEF: I couldn’t let her go. Maybe some day medicine, a miracle, something will bring her back.
[Martan jumps through the window and shoots Josef. Mick takes Beth down with him]
MICK: Stay down. Okay?
MARTAN: Die, vampire! [He stakes Josef] Why won’t you die?
MICK: It doesn’t always work like that.
[Mick is in vampire mode and easily fights Martan and breaks his neck. He goes over to Josef and takes the stake out]
JOSEF: Thanks.
MICK: You’re welcome.
[Cut to Mick pulling out the bullets of Josef’s body]
JOSEF: What are you using back there? Barbeque thongs?
MICK: Will you hold still? I’m trying to get the second bullet. You know, for a 400 year old vampire you sure have a low threshold for pain.
JOSEF: Well, giving is different than receiving. Ahh!
MICK: Done. How’s your stake wound?
JOSEF: Nothing a little blood wouldn’t help.
MICK: All these years, Josef, you ranting how it could never work between us and humans.
JOSEF: What happened to Sara is proof that I’m right.
MICK: Josef Kostan in love? This proofs that anything is possible.
JOSEF: Or love could show you a part of yourself you never knew existed.
MICK: Or a part that you thought you lost forever.
JOSEF: And then this happened. I guess the universe had a different plan for me. I guess who I am is who I’m supposed to be. You gonna try and make a thing with Beth work? I hope the universe is on your side.
[Beth walks in the room]
BETH: Are you okay?
JOSEF: I will be. That bastard staked me.
BETH: Are you coming back to L.A. with us?
JOSEF: I’m gonna stay here a few more days.
BETH: You should have this. [She hands him the diary] She really loved you.
FLASHBACK [Josef gives Sara the necklace and they kiss]
CUT TO STREET [Mick and Beth are walking]
MICK: Hey. You alright?
BETH: Yeah. I just can’t stop thinking about Sara. She was so in love with him.
MICK: Yeah, it’s terrible.
BETH: Do you really think there’s a cure?
MICK: Coraline made herself human. Is that a cure? I don’t know. I can’t say. Taxi! Come on, let’s go do something.
BETH: Like what?
MICK: I don’t know. Something fun. Something quintessentially New York. We’ll catch a set at the Village Vanguard, with a couple of martini’s. A steak for the lady. Just you and me on the town. Come on.
[A taxi pulls up]
BETH: I don’t know but our flight leaves in a couple of hours.
MICK: So, we’ll take a later flight.
BETH: Look, I don’t know. I… I didn’t leave things very well with Josh. I do think I need to get home.
MICK: Yeah. Of course.
BETH: But I’ll drop you.
MICK: No, it’s okay. I’ll walk. It’s a good town for it.
BETH: Okay.
[Beth gets in the cab. Mick puts his hand on the window and Beth returns the gesture. Mick walks off into the night]
CUT TO THE HOSPITAL [Coraline wakes up]
CORALINE: Mick?
[Cut to nurse’s station]
NURSE: Code blue!
[A crash team rushes into Coraline’s room, but she is gone]
